Synopsis In 1944, the war had reached a critical turning point. The Soviet Union, suffering devastating losses on the Eastern Front, was pressing the Allies hard to open a second front in Europe. Having learnt painful lessons from the failure at Dieppe, Allied commanders met at the Casablanca Conference and resolved to plan the largest military operation in history, codenamed Operation Overlord. In the early hours of 6th June, before the first light of dawn. Allied airborne forces descended silently into the darkness over Normandy, tasked with seizing coastal gun batteries and securing vital bridges. Then, as dawn broke, thousands of landing craft split through grey and churning seas, driving hard towards Omaha Beach. "The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.
